SENSITIVE VISUALS
I use a camera to connect to the world, to myself, to others, to a truth, to things that lie below the surface. Creating images is a powerful and dangerous act many have used for evil, so I know when I pick up a camera, I know I have a responsibility.
I fell into teaching photography early on in my life as a photographer, but I still prefer to collaborate with people instead of managing their image making process. I have personally had very little formal training (one class in high school and two in college as electives) and believe image making requires getting in touch with ourselves and how we can share our own visions more than something we can learn from an instructor.
My passion is to create images that have a message, emotion, and truth embedded in them. I try to create images that destabilize mine and our visual assumptions.
I have many mentors and people who have guided me with their image work. Estevan Oriel, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Barbara Crane, and Ken Gonzales Day to name a few.
