On Sunday, October 19th, at 10 AM, Breaking the Firewall will host a solidarity walk and talk about the decade-long campaign of local resistance to mining by Dalradian, a U.S.-owned, Canada-based company, in the Sperrin Mountains of County Tyrone, Ireland.
The walk will gather at the James Connolly statue at the corner of Ashland Ave. and Washington Blvd, 120 years and one day after Connolly's 1905 Labour Day speech in Chicago. We will ground ourselves in his anti-imperialist analysis and local ties, before taking the Green Line to State and Lake. In The Loop, we will visit several key sites along both sides of the DuSable Bridge over the Chicago River. We will illustrate the transnational reality of conquest and highlight ongoing struggles against empire. At each stop, we will pause for short presentations and community discussion. We hope to demonstrate how local action against extractive projects can disrupt global systems of oppression and connect struggles for sovereignty, justice, and dignity worldwide. We also invite cultural workers of all backgrounds and practices to come share their art and lift our spirits during the walking portions of the event. |
